Newport Beach


Newport Beach, incorporated in 1906, is a highly affluent city in Orange County which is part of Southern California. The city is home to Newport Harbor. Newport Beach is approximately ten miles south of downtown Santa Ana and about 44 miles southeast of Downtown Los Angeles. Los Angeles International Airport is approximately 44 miles to the northwest. The population is estimated at over 88,000. Huntington Beach is to the northwest; Costa Mesa, Irvine, and the John Wayne Airport are to the north. The San Juan Hills run from Newport Beach to San Juan Capistrano.

Upper Newport Bay

The Back Bay

Upper Newport Bay, also referred to as “The Back Bay”, is an estuary and large coastal wetland in the heart of Newport Beach. The area is a major stopover for thousands of birds including endangered species and is a place of great beauty. Upper Newport Bay is connected to the Pacific Ocean by means of Newport Beach Harbor.


Newport Bay Conservancy

Newport Bay Conservancy is a volunteer membership organization dedicated to protecting and preserving the Upper Newport Bay and associated wildlife.


Lower Newport Bay

Lower Newport Bay includes Newport Harbor and its seven islands. The largest small craft harbor in the United States is located in Newport Bay.


Newport Pier

Newport Pier is one of two city owned piers in Newport Beach, California located at the center of Balboa Peninsula. The pier, originally called the McFadden Warf when it was originally built in 1888, is 1,032 feet long and is a California Historical Landmark.


Balboa Island

Balboa Island is a highly affluent area in Newport Beach, California consisting of three islands in Newport Harbor. Balboa Island is the largest. The two smaller islands are Little Balboa Island and Collins Isle. The islands are connected to the mainland by a bridge and a fleet of ferryboats. Balboa Island is one of the highest density and most expensive residential areas in the United States. It is absolutely beautiful.


Balboa Peninsula

The Balboa Peninsula, also known as Balboa is a beautiful, highly affluent neighborhood in Newport Beach. The center of the peninsula is known as Balboa Village while the end is known as Balboa Peninsula Point. The peninsula forms a jetty enclosing Newport Harbor and the eight islands located within the harbor. Balboa Peninsula is home to three historical buildings: (1) Balboa Pavilion built in 1906, (2) Balboa Inn built in 1929, and (3) Balboa Theater built in 1928.


Balboa Fun Zone

The Balboa Fun Zone, opened in 1936 at Newport Harbor, is a family entertainment destination in Newport Beach on the Balboa Peninsula. The Balboa Fun Zone offers a 45’ Ferris Wheel, a carousel, arcades and games, bumper cars, a water slide, a bungee ride, harbor cruises, whale watching, fishing, restaurants, unique shops, a boardwalk, and much more. It is a great destination for family fun, wonderful views, and good food.


The Wedge

The Wedge is a famous surfing location at the east end of the Balboa Peninsula in Newport Beach, California. It has been a very popular spot for surfers since the 1950s and is known locally as “102 Beach”. Waves have been known to reach up to 30 feet high.


Balboa Pier

Balboa Pier, built in 1906, is one of two city owned piers in Newport Beach. It was built in connection with the Balboa Pavilion which is a California Historical Landmark and a National Historic Place.


Corona del Mar

Corona del Mar is a highly affluent neighborhood in Newport Beach, California. Corona del Mar is known for its spectacular beach, incredible views, and unique shops. The population is approximately 14,000.


Corona del Mar State Beach

Big Corona Beach

Corona del Mar State Beach, also known as Big Corona Beach, is a protected beach in the California State Park system. The 30 acre park was created in 1947 and is located in the Corona del Mar neighborhood of Newport Beach. The one-half mile sandy beach is popular with surfers, swimmers, divers, and volleyball players.


Crystal Cove Historic District

The Crystal Cove Historic District is part of the Crystal Cove State Park in Newport Beach and consists of 12.3 acres along the Southern California coast in Orange County. The historic district is famous for its 46 fully restored cottages with magnificent ocean views, built in the 1920s and early 1930s by the Irvine Company for wealthy movie directors and producers. The cottages are now available to be rented by the public and have become a popular vacation destination. The Crystal Cove Historic District is listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places.


San Juan Hills, Newport Beach

San Juan Hills is an affluent residential neighborhood that was annexed to Newport Beach, California in 2002. Prior to that time, it was a census-designated place. The neighborhood called San Juan Hills should not be confused with the mountain range named San Juan Hills which extends from Newport Beach southeast to San Juan Capistrano.


Newport Center

Fashion Island

Newport Center is a major business, employment, shopping, and entertainment district located on a bluff overlooking Newport Harbor in Newport Beach, California. Newport Center is also commonly referred to as Fashion Island which is an upscale retail, restaurant, and entertainment center in the center of Newport Center.


Grant Howard Park

Grant Howard Park and Community Youth Center is a popular community park in Newport Beach. The park features a large community room with a capacity of 60, a baseball diamond, basketball courts, tennis courts, picnic tables, barbeques, a large multipurpose athletic field, a children’s play area, and lots of green open space.


Sulphur Creek

Sulphur Creek Watershed

Sulphur Creek is a 4.5 mile tributary of Aliso Creek in Orange County, California that drains the southern area of the San Joaquin Hills which includes a large area extending from Newport Beach to San Juan Capistrano. Sulphur Creek is the largest tributary of Aliso Creek and the primary source of water that feeds Laguna Niguel Lake, also referred to as Sulphur Creek Reservoir.

Laguna Niguel Lake

Laguna Niguel Lake is a 44 acre artificial lake and reservoir created in 1966 by the construction of Sulphur Creek Dam on Sulphur Creek in Laguna Niguel. Surrounding the lake is Laguna Niguel Regional Park. The lake is well known for fishing and has a large island in its center. It is quite beautiful.
